What Is Fibrinolytic Activity?
The term fibrinolytic activity appears frequently in discussions of nattokinase and other enzymes.
But what does it actually mean?
At its most basic level, fibrinolytic activity refers to the ability to participate in or produce the breakdown of fibrin, a fibrous protein involved in blood clot structure.
Understanding this concept also helps explain why nattokinase activity is commonly expressed in Fibrinolytic Units, or FU.
What Is Fibrin?
Fibrin is a protein that plays an important structural role in normal blood clot formation.
During coagulation, the soluble protein fibrinogen is converted into fibrin. Fibrin forms a network that contributes to the structure and mechanical stability of a clot.
Fibrin formation is part of normal hemostasis—the body’s highly regulated process for limiting blood loss following vascular injury.
What Is Fibrinolysis?
Once a clot has served its physiological purpose, the body has mechanisms for breaking down its fibrin network.
This process is called:
fibrinolysis
The word can be understood as:
fibrin + lysis
meaning the breakdown or degradation of fibrin.
Fibrinolysis is therefore a normal physiological process and an important component of the body’s broader hemostatic system.
The Plasminogen-Plasmin System
A central component of physiological fibrinolysis is plasmin.
Plasmin circulates initially in an inactive precursor form called plasminogen.
Plasminogen can be converted to plasmin by physiological activators including:
- tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA)
- urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA)
Plasmin can then proteolytically degrade fibrin.
The fibrinolytic system is highly regulated by activators, inhibitors, fibrin structure and other biological factors.
It should therefore not be thought of simply as an unrestricted process of “dissolving blood clots.”
What Does “Fibrinolytic” Mean for an Enzyme?
When an enzyme is described as having fibrinolytic activity, the term can refer to experimentally measured activity involving fibrin or a fibrin-related assay system.
This is particularly relevant to nattokinase.
Nattokinase is a proteolytic enzyme associated with natto fermentation and is commonly characterized according to measured fibrinolytic enzyme activity.
What Are Fibrinolytic Units?
Nattokinase activity is commonly expressed using:
FU — Fibrinolytic Units
FU describe measured enzyme activity according to an applicable analytical assay.
This is fundamentally different from measuring the enzyme preparation by weight.
Therefore:
mg = weight
while
FU = measured fibrinolytic activity under specified assay conditions
The two measurements should not be treated as interchangeable.
How Is Fibrinolytic Activity Measured?
Researchers and manufacturers can evaluate fibrinolytic activity using laboratory assays.
Published scientific literature describes multiple approaches to measuring nattokinase activity, including fibrin-based and substrate-based methods.
Different analytical methods measure activity in different ways and have different strengths and limitations.
For this reason, an activity number should always be interpreted in the context of the assay used to generate it.
Why the Assay Matters
Enzyme activity is not simply a physical quantity like weight.
The reported result depends on a defined analytical procedure.
Variables can include:
- substrate
- enzyme concentration
- temperature
- pH
- incubation time
- reaction conditions
- reference standard
- method used to detect the reaction
Consequently, professional evaluation of an enzyme activity result should consider both:
the reported number
and
the analytical methodology behind that number
Fibrinolytic Activity vs Clinical Outcome
This distinction is particularly important.
Demonstrating fibrinolytic activity in a laboratory assay does not automatically establish a particular clinical outcome in humans.
Laboratory activity and clinical efficacy are different types of evidence.
A laboratory assay can characterize an enzyme’s activity under specified experimental conditions.
Determining whether a finished product produces a particular effect in humans requires appropriate clinical research.

Together, these provide a more complete description of the enzyme preparation than milligrams alone.
Fibrinolytic Activity Is Not a Quality Score
A higher measured activity value does not automatically establish that one finished product is superior to another in every respect.
Product evaluation can also involve:
- identity
- manufacturing controls
- purity specifications
- microbiological quality
- contaminant testing
- formulation
- stability
- packaging
- lot consistency
- documentation
FU therefore provides useful information about measured enzyme activity but should not be treated as a universal measure of product quality.
Questions Professional Buyers Should Ask
When evaluating a fibrinolytic enzyme preparation, useful questions include:
- What enzyme is being measured?
- What activity unit is being reported?
- What analytical method was used?
- What is the activity specification?
- What was the actual test result?
- Is the result associated with a specific production lot?
- Who performed the testing?
- Is supporting analytical documentation available?
- Is the activity reported per gram or per serving?
- Is the marketing language consistent with what the analytical result actually demonstrates?
These questions help distinguish laboratory measurements from broader product claims.
The Bottom Line
Fibrinolytic activity refers to activity involving the breakdown of fibrin.
In normal human physiology, fibrinolysis is a tightly regulated process in which plasmin plays a central role in degrading fibrin.
For nattokinase, fibrinolytic activity can be measured experimentally and expressed using activity units such as FU.
An FU value describes measured enzyme activity under applicable assay conditions.
It should not, by itself, be interpreted as proof that a finished dietary supplement prevents or treats a disease.
