From Pharmaceutical Research to Botanical Ingredient Science

Paul Suri didn’t begin his career in the supplement industry.

He began in pharmaceuticals.

Paul began his pharmaceutical career as an employee of Pfizer, working within the pharmaceutical research and development environment. He later transitioned from employee to consultant, initially continuing his work with Pfizer in a consulting capacity.

His consulting career subsequently expanded to research and development programs involving other major pharmaceutical companies, including Johnson & Johnson, Amgen and Novartis.

With academic training that includes a Master of Health Administration (MHA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA), Paul’s professional career developed around pharmaceutical research, development pipelines, scientific evidence and a fundamental question:

“What does the evidence actually support?”

Years later, that same question would lead him into an entirely different field:

Botanical and nutritional science.


WHEN SCIENCE BECAME PERSONAL

The event that changed Paul’s direction began with his father.

When his father developed dementia, Paul encountered a difficult reality: the pharmacological options available for his father’s condition at that time were limited.

For someone who had spent years around pharmaceutical research and development, it was an especially powerful experience.

Paul became deeply involved in caring for his father and remained involved through the progression of his condition and ultimately through the end of his life.

During those years, Paul began investigating areas that had previously been far removed from the center of his professional work.

Food. Plants. Mushrooms. Phytochemicals. Botanical extracts. And the scientific literature surrounding them.

His objective was not to reject pharmaceutical science. It was to ask what else science might teach us about nutrition, plants and human biology.


“NATURAL” WASN’T A GOOD ENOUGH ANSWER

Paul approached botanicals with many of the same questions that had followed him through pharmaceutical research.

What exactly is the ingredient? What species is it? What part of the plant is being used? Where did it come from? How was it processed? Is it whole botanical material or a concentrated extract? What is the extract ratio? What compounds characterize it? How clean is the raw material? What does analytical testing show? What does the Certificate of Analysis actually establish?

And perhaps most importantly: What does the published research actually support?

The deeper he went, the clearer something became: a plant name on a label tells only part of the story.


THEN CAME AMLA

AMLA became one of the botanicals that transformed this curiosity into formulation work.

At first, AMLA might seem straightforward: Indian gooseberry. Phyllanthus emblica.

But deeper investigation revealed considerable variation — different sources, forms, preparations, whole fruit, concentrated extracts, different extract ratios, different ingredient specifications.

The question was no longer simply: “Does this contain AMLA?”

It became: “What kind of AMLA is actually in it?”


10:1 → 20:1 → 30:1

Paul’s work with AMLA continued to evolve.

AMLAPure initially worked with a 10:1 concentrated AMLA extract. The formulation subsequently progressed to 20:1. Further ingredient and formulation work eventually led to the 30:1 concentrated extract used in AMLAPure’s current approach.

At the same time, Paul remained interested in the characteristics of whole AMLA fruit. Rather than viewing whole fruit and concentrated extract as interchangeable, this led to an approach incorporating both forms:

The objective was never simply to find the biggest extract ratio. It was to understand the ingredient more deeply and formulate intentionally.


THE QUESTIONS DIDN’T STOP WITH AMLA

The deeper Paul investigated botanical science, the broader his research interests became.

He became increasingly fascinated with phytochemicals and their interactions with biological systems. His research interests expanded into scientific literature involving cellular membranes and membrane permeability, host biology, viruses and plant compounds.

Another field became particularly fascinating: the gut-brain axis. Research into the relationships among the gastrointestinal system, microbiome, nutrition, metabolism and nervous-system signaling reinforced an increasingly important idea: human biology cannot always be understood by looking at one ingredient, one pathway or one biological system in isolation.


BRINGING TWO WORLDS TOGETHER

Paul did not abandon pharmaceutical science when he became interested in botanical nutrition. He brought its questions with him.

What is being studied? How was it measured? Was the research performed in a laboratory, an animal model or humans? Was the research conducted on an individual ingredient or the actual finished formulation? Does the evidence support the conclusion being made?

Those distinctions now help shape AMLAPure’s approach to ingredient science and education.


THE IDEA BEHIND AMLAPURE

AMLAPure grew at the intersection of two very different experiences: decades around pharmaceutical research and development, and a deeply personal journey that led Paul into botanical and nutritional science.

The connection between them is not “pharmaceutical versus natural.”

It is something simpler: follow the evidence. Understand the ingredient. Know what you’re actually looking at. And never stop asking better questions.
